SVG to DXF Converter
Convert an SVG to a DXF for laser cutters, CNC and CAD. The size in millimetres comes from the file’s own units and viewBox, curves become smooth polylines, and colours can become layers. The file is checked before you can download it.

1Your drawing
Drop an SVG here, or choose one. It stays on your device.
The preview is drawn from the finished file. DXF R12, millimetres.
Your SVG is read by this browser tab and never uploaded. The DXF is saved straight from this page.
2Settings
The size comes from the file’s own units and viewBox, read as the SVG standard and browsers read them. Type a width to override it; the height follows.
Height follows: –
DXF polylines are straight segments. This is the largest gap allowed between a curve and its segments.
How to convert SVG to DXF
- Drop the SVG. The drawing appears as the DXF will hold it.
- Check the width. It comes from the file’s own units and viewBox. If that isn’t the size you want, or the SVG states no real size, type the width here.
- Read the notes. Text and pictures can’t become outlines here, and the page says when any were left out.
- Download the DXF. The file is in millimetres, with its lower-left corner at 0, 0.
What gets converted
Paths, rectangles, circles, ellipses, lines, polylines and polygons, through groups, transforms and <use> copies. Only the centre line of each shape is written, so stroke width isn’t a cut width and fills don’t become hatching. Scripts and links in the file are never run or loaded, because the SVG is read as data and isn’t put in the page.
Text must be outlines first
A DXF made here holds lines, not fonts. In Inkscape use Path, then Object to Path. In Illustrator use Type, then Create Outlines. Then export the SVG again.
Why DXF R12
R12 is an old and simple version of DXF that CAD and laser programs have long read, and it stores shapes as plain polylines. There are no splines or arcs in the output: curves are made of short straight segments to the accuracy you pick.
What the check proves
The page writes the DXF, then reads that text back with a separate reader and counts what is really there: shapes, points, closed outlines and overall size. The download only turns on if they match what was meant to be written, and the preview is drawn from that read-back. That tests the file’s structure. We haven’t opened these files in every CAD or laser program, so check the first one in yours.
FAQ
How do I convert SVG to DXF?
Drop the SVG here, check the width and press Download DXF. You get a DXF R12 file in millimetres. There is no install and no account, and the file stays on your device.
Will my SVG keep its size?
Yes, if the SVG states one, such as width="100mm". If it only uses pixels, the page takes one pixel as 1/96 inch, the CSS rule. Type a width in millimetres to set it exactly.
Why is my text missing from the DXF?
Text in an SVG is a font instruction, not outlines. Convert the text to paths in your vector program, then export it again. The page tells you when it left text out.
Can I use the DXF on a laser cutter?
The file is plain polylines in millimetres, which is what laser software usually imports. Closed shapes stay closed and open lines stay open. Layers by colour help if your software sets cut and engrave by colour. Check the first file in your own software.
Is DXF or SVG better for laser cutting?
It depends on the software. Many laser programs take both. DXF is common in CAD and industrial machines, and SVG in hobby tools. DXF states millimetres more reliably, as SVG sizes can change between programs.
