PNG to DXF Converter

Turn a PNG or JPG into a DXF for laser cutters and CNC. The page traces the dark areas of a logo or drawing into closed outlines at the width you choose, and checks the file before you can download it.

How to convert PNG to DXF

  1. Open the picture. PNG and JPG both work, and you can paste a screenshot. Black shapes on white give the cleanest result.
  2. Tune the trace. The threshold is set by itself. Move it if parts are lost or joined. Smoothing removes rough edges and speck size removes dirt.
  3. Set the width. A picture has no real size, so type the width in millimetres you want the drawing to be.
  4. Download the DXF. Each outline is a closed polyline on the layer CUT.

What tracing can and can't do

Tracing follows the edge between dark and light, so it suits logos, line art, silhouettes and scanned sketches. It makes outlines, not CAD: a drawn circle becomes a many-sided polyline, not a true circle, and a line drawing gives two outlines, one on each side of the line. Photos have no clean edges and trace poorly, and you’ll get a lot of small shapes. If you have the artwork as an SVG, the SVG to DXF converter keeps it exact.

JPG to DXF

JPG works the same way. JPG compression leaves faint noise around edges, so a little smoothing and a slightly larger speck size help. Transparent areas of a PNG count as white.

Size and resolution

Pictures larger than 1600 pixels on the long side are scaled down before tracing, and the page says when it does. A bigger, sharper picture gives smoother outlines. The drawing’s width is measured across its traced shapes and doesn’t include any blank border in the picture.

What the check proves

The page writes the DXF, then reads that text back with a separate reader and counts what is really there: shapes, points, closed outlines and overall size. The download only turns on if they match what was meant to be written, and the preview is drawn from that read-back. That tests the file’s structure. We haven’t opened these files in every CAD or laser program, so check the first one in yours.

FAQ

How do I convert a PNG to DXF?

Open the PNG here, adjust the threshold if needed, type the width in millimetres and press Download DXF. There is no account, and the picture stays on your device.

Can I convert JPG to DXF?

Yes. JPG, PNG, WebP and other pictures your browser can open all work the same way. Use a little smoothing on JPGs, as compression leaves noise around edges.

Can I convert a photo to DXF?

You can, but the result is rarely useful. Tracing needs clear edges between dark and light, and photos make thousands of tiny shapes. For a photo on a laser, engrave the image itself. To cut a stencil, try the Stencil Maker.

What size will the DXF be?

The width you type, in millimetres. A picture’s pixels have no real size, so you set it, and the height follows from the shape of the picture.

Why does my line drawing have double lines?

Tracing outlines the area of each line, so a line gets an edge on both sides. For a single cut path you need a vector drawing. Draw it, or trace it in a vector program, and use the SVG to DXF converter.
